What: Removal and replacement of the damaged portion of red soft-surface path on the Katy Trail
When: Beginning the week of November 11, 2024; expected to be complete in eight weeks, by early January 2025
Where: A one-mile stretch of the soft-surface path, between Armstrong and Blackburn
Why: As you are likely aware, the soft-surface path that was installed in 2020 in a one-mile section of the Trail between Armstrong and Blackburn has developed a number of issues, including buckling and sheeting. Friends of the Katy Trail has been working to determine the cause of these issues.
FKT is now glad to report that construction to remove the existing damaged soft surface and replace it with new soft surface is moving forward. The removal work will begin the week of November 11, 2024, followed by the replacement phase of the work.
How to Use the Trail During This Project: This construction project will require strong community stewardship by our Trail users, as we will need to close the red path in this area during phases of the project. The public must stay off the new surface during installation and curing, so that we have a highly improved new walking and running path for the community.
To ensure your safety as well as the success of the construction, when the fencing is installed, please do not go into the closed areas of the Trail.
A note to those who live in residences on the East side of the Trail or generally access the Trail from the East side: During the fenced phase, many of the East side entrances will not provide access to the Trail directly. Please utilize any of the following entrances:
- Fitzhugh Avenue staircase entrance south of The Terminal at Katy Trail, located on the west side of the Trail
- 3400 Armstrong (cross street 4400 Buena Vista), located on the east side of the Trail
- Snyder’s Union, 3200 Carlisle Place (cross street 3300 Carlisle Street), located on the east side of the Trail
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding of this project, and we look forward to providing you with a repaired red soft-surface path soon.
